BOISE, Idaho — The Meridian Police Department issued a warning about scammers who are calling the public, pretending to be law enforcement, and demanding money.

According to the department, they received reports from Meridian residents about phone calls they received from "Lieutenant Dance" or "Captain Stokes." Police said they were threatened with being arrested if they did not follow their orders.

"Please remember we will never call you on the phone asking for money (gift cards) or threaten to arrest you," police department said in a news release.

As previously reported, the Idaho Scam Jam Alliance shared a list of signs to look for in a scam:

  1. Scammers pretend to be from an organization you know
  2. Pretending you have an urgent problem or a prize to win
  3. Pressure you to act quickly
  4. Ask you to pay them in a specific way, like gift cards, a wire transfer or cryptocurrency.

If you receive a call that may be suspicious, hang up and call Ada County Dispatch dispatch at (208)377-6790.

Scammers are actively posing as members of the Meridian Police Department. We've had several reports of Meridian...
