Boise mail carriers dye hair blue to raise awareness of 'Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive'

Boise residents wanting to participate in the drive can leave non-perishable foods at their mailbox on Saturday, May 11, and their mail carrier will pick them up.

BOISE, Idaho — Waking up in the morning, making coffee, and checking the mail can be a typical morning in Boise. But, if you catch a glimpse of your mail carrier, you may notice their hair may be blue.

On Wednesday morning, a few Boise mail carriers dyed their hair blue to raise awareness about the annual food drive called Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The event is unique compared to other food drives because instead of heading to a location to drop off food, Boise residents can leave non-perishable foods at their own mailbox to be picked up by their mail carrier. It's in an effort to address food insecurity.

"Food insecurity can come from kids at school. It can come from college kids, families and the elderly," City Letter Carrier Candace Lincoln said. "It helps a huge variety and population of everybody that needs the food."

According to a news release, all the food will be donated to the Idaho Foodbank and other hunger relief organizations.

Volunteers at the Undone Salon did the dyeing, and the mail carriers who had a "salon day" were members of the National Association of Letter Carriers of Treasure Valley.

The food drive is celebrated across the nation, and during Wednesday's event, a council member on behalf of Boise Mayor Lauren McLean pronounced every second Saturday in May "National Letter Carriers' Food Drive Day" in honor of the event.

For those who want to participate in the food drive, it will take place on Saturday, May 11.
