NAMPA, Idaho — The Nampa and Meridian Irrigation District (NMID) will begin to fill canals on Wednesday, April 3. It expects to be making deliveries no earlier than April 17, the district said in a news release.
NMID has completed many projects this winter to improve the efficiency of water delivery.
The NMID Board of Directors decided on March 19 to start the irrigation season Wednesday. Water will start at Ridenbaugh Canal from the Boise River near Barber Park at 3 a.m. Wednesday.
NMID said it will take several days to fill the irrigation system entirely and check for leaks. Residents will need to have their irrigation systems ready to receive water starting Wednesday. NMID expects delivery around April 17.
Water levels within the canals will change daily, NMID said, which creates a dangerous environment. Canal waters move quickly, and can be dangerous for children and adults alike. Canal waters are also very cold.
Keep children away from canals. Recreating in a canal is against the law, due to irrigation canals being private property and may result in a trespassing charge.
NMID also asks residents that live along canals to keep the rights of way open and not block these areas with things like landscaping equipment, cars, fences or patio furniture. Keeping the rights of way open will allow for incoming water to come in a timely manner.
