BOISE, Idaho — On Thursday, the Idaho Missing Person Clearinghouse Report for 2023 was released, showing data on missing people in the Gem State.

In 2023, 2,355 cases were entered into National Crime Information Center (NCIC), of which 2,297 were purged; meaning the person was located or the case was cleared. As of Dec. 31, 2023, 214 cases were still open and considered active, combining 2023 and previous years, according to Idaho State Police.

According to Idaho law, a missing person is defined as "a person whose whereabouts are unknown to a parent, guardian, caretaker or others who have normal contact with the person."

The report is designed to show missing people who were entered into the NCIC in the year 2023. With no specific investigative reports or techniques, this is just an overall picture of missing people in Idaho.

There are six categories of missing people:

Disability - a person of any age who is missing and under proven physical or mental disability or is senile.

Endangered - a person of any age who is missing under circumstances that indicate that their physical safety may be in danger.

Involuntary - a person of any age who is missing under circumstances indicating that the disappearance may not have been voluntary.

Juvenile - a person who is missing and not declared emancipated by the law and doesn't mean entry criteria for the other categories.

Catastrophe Victim - a person of any age who is missing after a catastrophe.

Other - a person not meeting the criteria for entry into any other category who is missing, with a reasonable concern for their safety or a person under the age of 21 and declared emancipated.

Of the 214 active cases, 62 of them were juveniles, 53 were endangered, 19 were involuntary, seven were disabled, six were catastrophe and 67 were categorized as other.

Other key insights show that 16-year-olds are the highest reported missing person. Comparing the sexes, there were only three more women missing than men, showing that the numbers were nearly identical.
