Boise Police Chief Ron Winegar is retiring — meaning the city of Boise will conduct another search for police chief.
Winegar, who has been with department for 29 years, was named chief in May 2023. He was also the department's interim chief twice, including in late 2022, after former police chief Ryan Lee resigned.
Winegar plans to retire on Sept. 20, according to a city of Boise news release. The city said it will begin its search for his replacement and release additional details, including the expected timeline, "once a process is finalized."
“I have been proud and humbled to serve the people of Boise as a member of the Boise Police Department for the past 29 years,” Winegar said in the release. “I love the people of this department and this community, and I know our sworn officers and professional staff will continue to work diligently to provide a safe and welcoming city for everyone.”
When he was sworn in, Winegar said he cared deeply about the Boise Police Department, the Treasure Valley and the city of Boise. The news release said Winegar had focused on leadership development, filling vacancies, supporting officers' health and wellness and preparing the department to meet the challenges of a growing community.
“During my time as Chief, we have made great strides as an organization. We have a solid foundation in place and are positioned to move forward with good leaders and community partners,” Winegar said in the release. “ I feel comfortable with my decision to retire (again) and return to spending more time with my family and loved ones.”
Boise Mayor Lauren McLean said of Winegar, "It has been an honor to work with Ron as our Police Chief. He has an incredible commitment to service and will be missed by the department, the city, and our community. I will always be grateful that he was willing to serve when I called and look forward to his continued leadership as we begin the search for a new Chief.”
The police department dealt with some turmoil leading up to Winegar's appointment as chief. Lee resigned in 2022 after internal complaints. An investigation into racism in the department later revealed that there was an organized campaign to remove Lee.
In October 2022, McLean said she would conduct a search for the next police chief. But the city never posted the job opening, took applications or conducted interviews. Winegar, who was serving as interim chief, got the job.
