ACHD shift priority plowing to tackle another round of snow

The Ada County Highway District said road pre-treatments are ineffective with such low temperatures, so crews are taking another approach.

BOISE, Idaho — Another winter storm is set to hit the Treasure Valley and bring snowfall Tuesday night, so the Ada County Highway District (ACHD) will transition from plowing residential streets to plowing major roads and intersections.

A news release from ACHD said with the rapidly approaching storm, crews will continue working 12-hour shifts as long as necessary in order to keep operations going 24 hours. Currently, crews are plowing residential streets, which are a Priority 3, but when the storm hits, they will switch to Priority 1 roads.

Priority 1 roads include arterials, collectors, major intersections, overpasses, bridges, hospitals, fire stations, railroad crossings, school crossings, and streets with grades over six percent.

As KTVB meteorologists reported, Wednesday night is expected to see freezing temperatures. Due to those frigid temperatures, ACHD said it needed to change its approach.

"With the record-low temperatures, pre-treatments such as magnesium chloride are ineffective, and therefore other snow and ice control methods are deployed," ACHD said. "Crews have been applying sand or a salt/sand mix at intersections and in areas where more traction is needed for vehicles."

Temperatures are expected to rise after Wednesday and ACHD wanted to remind the public to remove snow from storm drains to help prevent flooding. Residents who see flooded streets should contact Ada County Non-Emergency dispatch at (208) 377-6790.

Below is a list of the highway district's priority roads:

  • Priority 1: arterials, collectors, major intersections, overpasses, bridges, hospitals, fire stations, railroad crossings, school crossings, and streets with grades over six percent
  • Priority 2: School bus routes and vulnerable populations
  • Priority 3: Residential streets, including cul-de-sacs
