Sections of Highway 21 closed due to avalanche, deep and drifting snow

State Highway 21 is closed Friday north of Idaho City to Lowman. The highway is also closed from Grandjean to Banner Summit to due an avalanche Thursday night.

BOISE, Idaho — Two sections of State Highway 21 remain closed Friday due to winter weather conditions and an avalanche Thursday night, the Idaho Transportation Department reported.

The highway closed in both directions between Grandjean and Banner Summit after an avalanche happened between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Thursday. ITD said two vehicles were involved in the avalanche, but no injuries were reported.

The stretch, nicknamed "Avalanche Alley," will be reassessed by crews at 7 p.m. Friday. The closure is from milepost 93.7 to milepost 105.5.

Shortly after 7:30 a.m. Friday, State Highway 21 also closed in both directions from mile marker 48 to mile marker 72, stretching from eight miles north of Idaho City to Lowman.

According to ITD, the area is experiencing deep and drifting snow. The Boise County Sheriff's Office said crews are working to clear the road with a rotary snow blower. The Granite Creek parking lot may be used for snowmobilers.

"Please do not go around the closed barricades as you could be subject to a misdemeanor fine and will be in the way of incoming road equipment," the Boise County Sheriff's Office said.
