Boise School District superintendent announces retirement

During a monthly meeting, BSD Superintendent Coby Dennis announced that he would retire effective June 30, 2024.

BOISE, Idaho — The Boise School District (BSD) Superintendent Coby Dennis announced on Tuesday, Jan. 8, during a monthly board meeting, he will be retiring effective June 2024. The day before, the Boise School Board (BSB) unanimously voted to interview a successor.

BSD said in a news release that Dennis has worked for the school district since 1991, working as a teacher, assistant principal, deputy superintendent and superintendent throughout Idaho. Board members praised Dennis for his work and dedication to the BSD.

"After 33 years of dedicated service to our Boise Schools community, we congratulate Superintendent Dennis on his upcoming and well-deserved retirement," BSD President Dave Wagers said. "Superintendent Dennis and his administrative team have made significant contributions to our District, implementing innovative programs and initiatives that have positively impacted our community's students and staff alike. We are grateful for his leadership and wish him a healthy and happy retirement."

Board members said Dennis expressed gratitude for being able to serve as the superintendent of the district.

"For almost a half-century, there have been two things in my life that have consistently brought me joy – my family and the Boise School District. There are so many people to thank and please know that you have all had a profound effect on me and my family," Superintendent Dennis said.

Dennis also stated that the district will be in good hands under the new leadership.

That leadership potentially will be Lisa Roberts, as the board unanimously voted 7-0 on Wednesday to interview her for the BSD superintendent role.

BSD said Roberts has been working for the district for 31 years, working as a teacher, elementary school principal, director, and, for the last five years, a deputy superintendent. She also served on the St. Luke's Community Health Board for 18 years.

There will be a special board meeting on Jan 17, at 5:30 p.m. at the District Service Center where the public can comment before Roberts is interviewed for the position.
