AAA: Winter windshield safety tips

With freezing temperatures and snowy conditions coming to the Treasure Valley soon, AAA reminds drivers how to stay safe on the road.

BOISE, Idaho — With many Treasure Valley residents seeing frost and fog, AAA wants to remind drivers of best practices for dealing with a frosty windshield.

AAA provided a list of helpful tips to keep driving safely:

  • Clear away ice and snow from car windows, lights, the roof and hood.
  • Wipe grime off headlights, brake lights and back-up camera.
  • Never use hot water to melt ice on your windshield as the thermal shock could crack the glass.
  • Don't tap your glass to dislodge ice.
  • Replace skipping or streaking wiper blades.
  • Use a washer fluid with deicing properties.

"It can be really tempting to clear away just enough to see the road ahead, but please remember that your windshield and windows exist for a reason – to provide the most comprehensive view possible for safe driving," AAA Idaho Public Affairs Director Matthew Conde said.

Conde continued, "Visibility is critical to the safety of all road users, especially because icy roads, fog, and increased dark hours may require even more reaction time than you might otherwise need to prevent a crash."
