Jeremy Best's preliminary hearing postponed until competency test results return

On Dec. 4, the defense requested the Department of Health and Welfare conduct a mental competency evaluation. The court date was originally set for Dec. 18.

BOISE, Idaho — The preliminary hearing for Jeremy Best, the man accused of shooting and killing his wife and unborn child, has been postponed.

According to court documents filed Thursday, county prosecutors and lawyers representing Best co-filed a motion to suspend proceedings and postponed the Dec. 18 hearing.

During Best's arraignment on Dec. 4, the defense requested the Department of Health and Welfare conduct a mental competency evaluation.

On Thursday, both the prosecution and the defense said the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the case warrant postponing the hearing until the results from his competency evaluation are returned.

As KTVB previously reported, on Thursday, Nov. 30, Teton County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to a home located at 4600 Skyline Loop in Victor, where Jeremy's 38-year-old pregnant wife Kali Jean Best was found dead.

Police said Jeremy was likely "armed and very dangerous." An AMBER Alert was then issued for Jeremy's 10-month-old son Zeke Gregory Best on Dec. 1.

On Dec. 2, around 9:15 a.m., Bonneville County Dispatch received a call from a group of hunters who said they found a man in a sleeping bag on the side of the road. The report came from Kepps Cross Road, near Dan Creek Road, east of Idaho Falls.

The caller said the man "was naked and making odd statements," according to a news release. Upon arrival, Bonneville County Sheriff's Office deputies identified the man as Jeremy Best.

The vehicle Jeremy was driving was found nearby down an embankment, said police. Jeremy's son Zeke was found dead in the area of the vehicle; police have not yet said whether he was found inside the car or near it.

No details have been released about Zeke's cause of death, and Jeremy has not been charged in connection to his death.

Best is being held in the Bonneville County Jail without bond.
