BSD finishes investigation into man boarding school bus with gun

The district will introduce route changes to address bus overcrowding and said the number of students on the bus when the incident happened created confusion.

BOISE, Idaho — The Boise School District (BSD) released the results of their investigation on Tuesday regarding an incident on Nov. 9, when a man boarded a school bus with a gun.

According to the BSD, the bus driver, administrators and police involved performed well, but they have areas of concern they will address in the future.

The district will introduce route changes to address bus overcrowding and said the number of students on the bus when the incident happened created confusion.

"This will be addressed through reassignment of bus routes to reduce the number of students eligible for the route," BSD said. "All students who currently ride the bus will still receive transportation, however they may be assigned a new route. Communication has been sent to those families directly impacted."

It was revealed that the man boarded the bus at the same stop used by Valley Regional Transit buses.

"There is strong evidence to indicate that the suspect may have believed he was boarding a city bus," BSD said. "We are exploring new stop locations that will improve safety while remaining easily accessible for current students."

The Boise School District also brought forward system recommendations.

They addressed the question of whether they shouldn't allow students who don't have valid school IDs. Although they argue that implementing this system can leave students behind, hinder new students and delay students. However, they are creating a Student Transportation Advisory to explore future options.

They also said they will improve bus driver training and review basic operating procedures. Also, educate students to help them report suspicious behavior.

"We understand that access to safe, efficient, and reliable transportation to and from school plays an important role in the success of our students and families," BSD said. "We are grateful for your understanding and continued support."

BSD said if any parent has a question about the changes to reach out to them at (208) 854-4000
