Maryland filmmaker still missing in Idaho

The sheriff’s office searched for almost a week for Terrence Woods Jr., using helicopters and search dogs but couldn't find him.

BOISE, Idaho — Five years ago, a filmmaker from Maryland went missing near Elk City, Idaho and the Idaho County Sheriff's Office is still looking for him.

Terrence Woods Jr. was reported missing on October 5th, 2018, and Tuesday October 24, 2023, would have been his 32nd birthday.

Dateline did a Cold Case Spotlight article about this case which prompted KTVB to look into it.

He was working as a producer with a film crew from London doing a documentary on the Penman Mines in the Orogrande area in Idaho.

The 27-year-old was reported missing after being separated from the film crew he was working with.

KTVB spoke with Douglas Giddings, a retired sheriff's deputy who worked on the case, he said crew members said after a day of filming, Woods just took off running and ran down a cliff.

The former deputy said crew members tried to catch up to Woods but were not able to find him.

The sheriff’s office searched for almost a week for Woods using helicopters and search dogs but couldn't find him, ending the search after not finding any leads.

Giddings said this is a unique case because there was no trace of Woods, even though he went missing near an area not far from people.

"What's interesting is we've never seen nor heard of anything about him. We couldn't find any clothes. The tracks are the best that we could follow, but they believe they were his but that's not an absolute,” Giddings said. “There's been no sign, there's been no information, there's been no sighting, there's been nothing and that definitely is unusual."

KTVB reached out to the Idaho County Sheriff's Office for the latest updates on the investigation and on Woods' case but was told that because the investigation is open and active, the records could not be shared at this time.

Giddings said, at the time of his retirement in 2020, there were no new updates in the case.
