The Foster Grandparents program in Idaho helps kids with studies and more

The Foster Grandparent Program of the Treasure Valley is vital and present throughout southwestern Idaho.

Sponsored by Scandinavian Designs.

The Foster Grandparents Program allows senior community members to assist in education in Idaho classrooms. Many retirees and senior citizens who are 55 + connect as volunteers with children in a mentoring and tutoring relationship.

Volunteers may serve in Ada, Canyon, Elmore, Gem, Owyhee, and Boise Counties in Idaho. Many Foster Grandparents serve in schools near their homes and become the school grandparents for years to come.

Speaking to Idaho Today host Mellisa Paul, spokesperson Jackie Mildenberger has been a part of the program for eight years and told Paul that it was a great way to get involved with Idaho's youth.

Decades of outcome measurements in Idaho schools show children working with Foster Grandparent volunteers:

  • Demonstrate gains in school readiness
  • Develop healthy behaviors and attitudes in educational settings
  • Improve academic performance (literacy, writing, math, etc.)
  • Improve social and emotional skills
