Man survives falling off cliff in Idaho County

He sustained a severe head injury, hurt both ankles, a knee and a hip, the Idaho County Sheriff's Office said.

BOISE, Idaho — A man was injured after falling off a cliff at Indigo Lake in Idaho County. The Idaho County Sheriff's Office said that on Tuesday, they received an SOS activation, and the man said he had fallen off a cliff, which they mapped to be at the edge of Indigo Lake.

According to police, Life Flight responded, but due to bad weather and terrain, they could not land, and Two Bear Air was down for maintenance. Officials formed a ground team consisting of Idaho County Deputies, Grangeville Mountain Rescue Unit members, a Stites Fire Department member, and units from the Riggins Ambulance.

They embarked from the Slate Lake Trailhead, and around 6:30 p.m., they found the man at Indigo Lake. Police said it took them five hours to walk him four miles to a four-wheeler, which they used to carry him for about a mile.

Police reported he had fallen from the cliff the night before and was unconscious for an unknown amount of time. The man had a severe head injury and injured his ankles, knee and hip.

According to police, he found his gear and his pack the next day and walked over two canyons to get to Indigo Lake, where he activated his SOS.
