JEROME, Idaho — Police say they have located the body of a Jerome man who was reported missing last week.
Michael Underwood, 78, was found and recovered from a canal near the Jerome Animal Shelter Monday, according to police.
He had been missing since Wednesday, Sept. 20.
On Thursday, police say they found his backpack at the edge of a canal near his home, along with what appeared to be downward slide marks on the muddy canal bank.
"We are saddened by this loss, and send our condolences to his family," the Jerome Police Department said in a statement.
The police department went on to thank everyone who helped in the search for Underwood.
"We mourn with the family and our community at the loss of one of our citizens, and are [relieved] they can have closure in this case," police said.
