Police: Nampa man shot by officer 'lunged' towards person with knife

Police said initial information indicates the man, identified as Adam Michael Trejo, was shot after he "lunged aggressively" towards a citizen with a knife.

NAMPA, Idaho — A Nampa Police officer shot and killed someone near Marketplace Boulevard and Midland Boulevard Wednesday afternoon, police say.

According to Nampa Police Interim Chief Curt Shankel, a patient ran from the St. Luke's Hospital emergency room nearby and was running in the middle of the road, causing disruption of traffic and making his way into different restaurants.

The Canyon County Sheriff's Office on Thursday said the man, identified as 37-year-old Adam Michael Trejo of Nampa, stole two knives from a restaurant in the area during the incident. He also reportedly attempted to steal multiple cars before a Nampa Police officer was close enough to order Trejo to drop the knives.

Police originally said Trejo "confronted" law enforcement with a knife after he ran out of the McDonald's on Midland Boulevard. An early update on the Critical Incident Task Force investigation determined Trejo instead "lunged aggressively" towards a nearby person after the confrontation with the officer.

The officer shot and killed Trejo after he moved toward the citizen. The sheriff's office said officers immediately provided emergency medical aid, but Trejo died at the scene of the shooting.

The Canyon County Coroner's Office has completed an autopsy. The results and results of the toxicology report are pending. The CITF investigation, led by the sheriff's office, is ongoing.

Nampa Police Department Spokesperson Carmen Boeger told KTVB that officers were not injured in the shooting. The Nampa officer who shot and killed Trejo has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Investigators received multiple videos of the incident from citizens, in addition to security footage from businesses in the area, which will be used during the CITF investigation.

Wednesday's incident was the ninth shooting in the Treasure Valley this year.
