Body of missing Caldwell fisherman found in canal

Police said the man went fishing at Lake Lowell earlier this week.

CALDWELL, Idaho — The body of a missing Caldwell man was recovered Wednesday morning by deputies after hours of searching.

Jay Hartsock, 85, was fishing near the lower dam of Lake Lowell Tuesday. He failed to return home and was reported missing that afternoon.

The Canyon County Sheriff's Office said they found Hartsock at 6 a.m. Wednesday in a canal near Highway 19 and Allendale Road. Officials believe he entered the swift canal water and died from accidental drowning.

An missing person alert was sent out Tuesday but was later canceled.

"My heart goes out to the family and friends of Mr. Hartsock. This is obviously not the result any of us were hoping for," Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue said. "I want to thank the other agencies and the irrigation district who assisted us in both our search and recovery efforts."
