Police name officers who shot man near Ann Morrison Park

The officers involved in the shooting that killed 54-year-old Christian Johnson were Corporal. A. Johnson and Officer G. Miller.

BOISE, Idaho — One man is dead after a shooting involving the Boise Police Department, marking the sixth police shooting in the city this year.

Boise Police Chief Ron Winegar said during a press conference a man called police Thursday morning before 11 a.m. and two officers responded at a parking lot on Dale Street, located near Ann Morrison Park.

Police had a conversation with the same man -- he said he was going to go back inside his apartment, but instead ran down the stairs with "at least one sharp or edged weapon" Winegar said.

That man was identified by the Ada County Coroner on Friday as 54-year-old Christian Johnson. He died of multiple gunshot wounds.

The police named in the shooting are Corporal. A. Johnson, who has been on the force for 23 years, and Officer G. Miller, who has been on the force for two years.

"The subject aggressively approached the officer" with the weapon, Winegar said -- police asked Johnson to drop the weapon and he did not. Police shot him and he died at the scene.

Neighbors told KTVB they heard what they believe was around five gunshots and they thought there was a body located behind a dumpster in an apartment construction site.

Steve McConville, a neighbor near the scene, said that he heard the shots but believed it was the noise from construction outside.  He said around 8 a.m., he went outside to walk his dog and saw a suspicious person that was "pacing back and forth" with hands in his pockets.

McConville said this shooting surprised him because the neighborhood is safe.

"The stress and aftermath of a shooting" is incredibly stressful for those involved, Winegar said.

"We must do better as a community," Winegar said. "We can't just keep responding to incidents when they occur... We have to be seeking solutions. We can't just keep meeting on the street corner and talking about officer involved shootings."

On July 27, BPD was involved in a fifth shooting this year that killed 28-year-old Macey Juker -- a week later it happened again, marking six shootings within nearly eight months.

"That is six too many," Winegar said.

Meridian Police Department will be the head of the investigation into the incident as part of the Critical Investigation Task Force.

An hour before the shooting, a 16-year-old was struck by a truck and died near 17th and State Street. Winegar addressed this during the press conference for the shooting, saying the department's resources have been stretched very thin.

An Emergency BroncoAlert was sent to Boise State University students and faculty around 11:30 a.m. Thursday. The scene has been secured. People are asked to avoid the area.
