Searchers recover body of man in Lucky Peak Reservoir

Ada County Sheriff's Office said that the man went into the water without a lifejacket on Sunday.

BOISE, Idaho — Update: Crews located the man's body at approximately 11 a.m. Tuesday, about 173 feet below the surface of the lake, said Gene Ralston, who assisted the Ada County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in an underwater search operation. The body was recovered at about 2 p.m. Officials have not yet released the man's name. Previous story is below.

A man who went underwater Sunday on Lucky Peak Reservoir is believed to have drowned. A recovery effort is ongoing.

According to the Ada County Sheriff's Office (ACSO), emergency dispatch received a call at about 5 p.m. Sunday, indicating a man wasn't wearing a lifejacket when he went in the water near Turner Gulch.

The sheriff's office said initial information indicated that a 35-year-old man was on a ski boat with several people, including children, about 300 to 400 yards from Turner Gulch. Witnesses told deputies the children were riding tubes and they flipped, and that the man then jumped in the water to help them. The children were wearing life jackets but the man was not, according to the sheriff's office.

Crews with the Boise Fire Department and ACSO marine patrol tried to find the man Sunday night. The water in the area where the man was last seen is more than 100 feet deep, the sheriff's office said.

A spokesman for the sheriff's office said the dive team is expected to resume recovery efforts Tuesday, with the assistance of underwater search-and-recovery expert Gene Ralston. The sheriff's office said Ralston has specialty equipment and decades of experience locating bodies in deep water.
