BOISE, Idaho — Renewable energy sources continue showing up all across the Treasure
Valley and the state of Idaho. To ensure customers know their requests are heard, Idaho Power proposed a new plan to expand its clean energy options.
Not only will this plan be helpful for customers, but it will help Idaho Power meet its goal of providing 100% clean energy by 2045, which the company announced it would strive to achieve in 2019.
"There is a tremendous amount of interest in clean energy and renewable energy solutions," said Megan Ronk, the director of economic development and innovation for Idaho Power.
Most of Idaho Power's energy sources come from clean hydropower, but the goal is to reach 100% clean energy by 2045 by including more wind, solar and geothermal sources.
"We are really proud of the clean energy we deliver to our customers today, but there are customers who have developed more targeted, renewable goals or net carbon goals," Ronk said.
In an effort to continue its strides to reach 100% clean energy, Idaho Power proposed expanding clean energy options to customers.
"This filing is about expanding the menu of options to our customers to be able to help them meet their respective sustainability or renewable initiatives," Ronk said.
If approved, the program will include three features that will provide customers ways to up to 100% renewable energy"
- Flexibility: This option will allow customers to purchase renewable energy in blocks covering 100% of their usage.
- Subscriptions: This allows customers to pay a set monthly fee.
- Construction: A partnership between Idaho Power and large industrial customers to continue to build ways to provide and improve renewable energy.
"For some of our largest industrial companies, it would enable us to enter into a special agreement with new renewable resources to meet their specific goals," Ronk said.
The proposal was filed with the Idaho Public Utilities Commission. If approved, Ronk predicts it could take several years to roll out.
The flexibility option, which is proposed to be the new name of Idaho Power's Green Power Program, is available now for customers to subscribe for as low as
$1 to contribute to renewable energy.
