Ada County coroner identifies woman who was killed by Boise police

The victim in Sunday's officer-involved shooting was a 33-year-old Caldwell woman.

BOISE, Idaho — The Ada County coroner identified the victim in the officer-involved shooting that happened on Sunday morning in Boise as 33-year-old Amber Lea Dewitt of Caldwell.

Dewitt died from multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene, according to the coroner's report.

The shooting happened on Clover Drive, off of State Street in Boise at about 6:00 a.m. Sunday.

"As the officers spoke with her she continued to fidget and reach for items in the vehicle and inside her purse," Boise Police said in a statement. "The woman did not comply with officers requests to stop reaching for items in the car and reports indicate she eventually produced a weapon and pointed it at one of the officers."

A man, who called police on Dewitt when she was knocking on neighbors' doors and roaming the neighborhood, said he heard about five gunshots in "rapid succession."

The case is now being investigated by the Critical Incident Task Force, which is now being led by the Meridian Police Department.

In a news conference on Sunday morning, Boise Police did not release many details on the officer-involved shooting, other than no officers were injured in the shooting.

The officers involved in the shooting were Corporal D. Hofmann, who has been in law enforcement for 26 years, and Officer M. Canfield, who has been with the Boise Police Department for nine years. Boise Police said both officers are on paid leave as per department policy.

The Boise Police Department also stated that both officers were wearing body cameras and the footage from the shooting is now being reviewed.
