Family escapes as Boise Bench home catches fire

According to Boise Fire, the blaze began in a shed behind the building, then spread to the house and another nearby shed.

BOISE, Idaho — Firefighters and police are on scene of a fire in the Boise Bench neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.

The fire  - which was reported at about 1:45 p.m. - burned in a small yellow-and-white house at 2312 West Overland Road.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, Overland Road was shut down in both directions at Columbus Street as crews worked. Dispatchers say they have not received any reports of injuries.

According to Boise Fire, the blaze began in a shed behind the building, then spread to the house and another nearby shed.

The first shed burned down, while the home and the second shed took extensive damage, officials said.

Firefighters were seen taking out multiple pieces of burnt furniture outside the home as they continued to clean up the scene.

The renters who lived at the home are refugees from the Congo. Everyone was able to get outside the house safely. The father told KTVB he was at work when his neighbor called him alerting him of the fire.

"First off, When I heard the news about my house getting ablaze I was thinking more about my kids," he said through a translator.

He rushed home and found his kids and wife okay. He told KTVB, when the fire broke out, the kids had on the couch watching TV, while his wife was sleeping as she works a night shift at her job.

The family did receive money from the Boise Fire Burnout Fund to help with any financial needs they have right now. The fire department was looking to find them a place to stay. The home sustained too much damage from the fire and smoke for someone to live in it.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
