BOISE, Idaho — Boise State's iconic blue turf is getting replaced for the 2019 football season, and construction work begins this week at Albertsons Stadium, university officials announced on Thursday.
'The Blue' has been showing a lot of wear and tear in recent years, so officials made the decision to replace it this off-season.
The last time it was replaced was in 2010.
"It's needed," athletic director Curt Apsey said in January. "We're not just doing it to do it. It's near the end of the usual lifespan."
Artificial turf fields typically last eight to 10 years.
This will be the sixth edition of the blue turf since it was first installed in 1986.
According to Boise State, the new turf will include updated fonts to the numbers on the field and the word marks in both end zones. It will also feature updated Albertsons Stadium logos.
Officials say a shorter turf will extend to cover what used to be a track on the east and west sides of the playing surface.
The project, which is expected to cost between $600,000 and $1 million, is scheduled to conclude May 30.
