Plague likely cause of Elmore County cat death

Health officials believe the cat had contact with ground squirrels before it died.

BOISE — An Elmore County cat has died from what was likely a plague infection, according to health officials.

Central District Health says the feral cat had known contact with ground squirrels before it died.

Family members who began caring for the animal are being treated with antibiotics as a precaution.

This is the second report of a cat becoming infected with the plague in Elmore County this summer.

The first pet received treatment and recovered.

Health officials say a child in Elmore County also became infected with plague in May. The child was treated and made a full recovery.

Health officials want to remind everyone that plague is transmitted through the bite of infected fleas and can cause serious illness in people and pets if not treated right away.
