ACSO: Boise man tried to hold onto canoe after fall into Snake River

The man disappeared Saturday afternoon from a canoe that tipped over near Celebration Park.

MELBA, Idaho -- The search continued Monday for a man missing after capsizing a canoe in the frigid Snake River Saturday.

The 31-year-old Boise man and a 31-year-old woman was canoeing near Celebration Park when the canoe tipped at about 3:40 p.m.

Investigators say the couple had put in near the Swan Falls Dam, and were about a mile and a half from Celebration Park when they hit some water turbulence and capsized.

Neither the man nor the woman was wearing life jackets, according to the Ada County Sheriff's Office, but they had them in the canoe. The woman was able to grab one of the vests, and used it to keep her afloat as she swam to shore.

According to witnesses who called 911, the man held on to the canoe for a while before attempting to swim to the shore. He remains missing.

Sheriff's officials say the 53-degree water was moving swiftly, and dozens of feet deep in the area.

Paramedics treated the woman for hypothermia at the scene. Deputies from Ada, Canyon, and Owhyee county sheriff’s offices, searched for the missing man, using boats and sonar equipment. An air ambulance helicopter conducted an aerial search of the river and riverbanks, but came up empty.

The search was suspended as darkness fell, then picked up again Sunday morning.

Canyon and Owyhee county sheriff's deputies routinely patrol the Snake River in that area and will continue to use sonar to try to find the man, officials say.

Ada County’s Trauma Intervention Program are providing support to the woman and family members.

The missing man's name has not been released.
