Local wounded veteran competes on the national stage in 'Shotmakers'

Chad Pfeifer was surrounded by friends and family Monday night as they watched him compete in a new Golf Channel show.

BOISE - Love for the game isn't what lead Chad Pfeifer to the golf course, but over the years it's certainly has kept him there.

"I went out and hit a couple shots off the sweet spot and I was just hooked from there," said Pfeifer.

Now, he is competing on the national stage yet again, on a new show called "Shotmakers" on the Golf Channel.

His journey hasn't always been easy. Pfeifer is a wounded veteran who lost his leg in Iraq in 2006 when his patrol vehicle was destroyed by an improvised explosive device, or IED.

Golf turned out to be what kept him going.

"There were plenty of times where I was depressed and I was like I really wish I had my leg back or I really wish that hadn't happened," Pfeifer said.

Ultimately, when he's asked if he would change anything, he says that answer is no.

"Golf was that thing that kind of gave me that edge back, that competitive edge," Pfeifer said. "It was something that I could compete with able-bodied people on a level playing field."

Just a few years after picking up the game that he says saved his life, he turned pro. The goal behind that was to let other wounded vets know they're not alone.

"You're going to have bad breaks in life but I can tell anybody there's always a positive on the other end so just keep pushing for it and make the best of it," Pfeifer said.

As he continues to shine a light on his story on the national stage, he hopes to also inspire everyone watching, including his three little boys.

"They'll know that their dad didn't quit," said Pfeifer. "I'm just trying to set a good example for them, so that they grow up and be the best at whatever they want to be."

You can catch "Shotmakers" on Mondays and Tuesdays on the Golf Channel.
