Life-saving 'Stop the Bleed' class comes to Boise

Participants learn how to pack a wound, how to use a tourniquet and how to keep a patient alive long enough for emergency responders to arrive.

BOISE- If you ever find yourself in an emergency where somebody might be bleeding uncontrollably, would you know how to stop it?

On Saturday, Saint Alphonsus hosted a class to teach people what to do to save a life.

It's part of national campaign called “Stop the Bleed."

The class is for anyone. Participants learn how to pack a wound, how to use a tourniquet and how to keep a patient alive long enough for emergency responders to arrive.

People who attended the course said it was simple and well worth it.

“The idea is to make it a safer place,” said Aaron Miner, who works for the Ada County Sheriff’s Office and attended the class. “If you have more tools to do that then at the end of the day if something bad were to happen you'd be able to take care of more people."

“Heaven forbid we have a multiple shooting incident or something like that,” said Dr. Bill Morgan, a trauma surgeon at Saint Alphonsus. “The sooner we stop the bleeding the more likely these people are to survive the injuries and get to definitive care.”

Other situations in which instructors said this training would be useful include car accidents or while spending time in the wilderness, where you might not have access to immediate help if an emergency happened.
