'Gift from the lake' | Once mysterious metal die to find home at Independence Point

Prior to Driftwood Point, the tank was on a man's land along the Coeur d'Alene river near Cataldo. From there, it washed 26 miles down the river and onto the point.

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – Remember when that giant piece of metal made to look like a die washed up on Lake Coeur d’Alene around this time in 2017?

At first, no one had a clue how it got here but KREM solved the mystery. After the images went viral, KREM 2 learned that a guy, who owns a printing shop in Spokane, decorated the metal tank after it washed up near a family cabin on Driftwood Point a decade ago. High waters in 2017 floated it away, right into downtown Coeur d'Alene. Before that, it is a story that began in the Silver Valley.

All this time later, what's going to happen to the die? It is no longer on the land by the old skatepark because the area is being torn up. The city's parks director said they are still planning on refurbishing the die and placing it on Independence Point. It will likely go on one of the grassy areas. There will even be a sign calling it a "Gift from the Lake." It will hopefully be done sometime this summer.

For now, the chunk of metal sits in storage.
