GARDEN CITY -- Officers are investigating after a woman said she was pistol-whipped during an argument at a Chinden Boulevard business.

Garden City Police Lt. Tom Patterson said the incident was reported at about 11:15 a.m. as an armed robbery at the Sunliner Motel. Officers arrived at the motel and spoke to the victim and spoke to the victim and witnesses, ultimately determining no property had been taken.

Patterson said the suspect is accused of hitting the victim with a small handgun late Monday night or very early Tuesday.

The suspect and victim are believed to know each other. The man ran away from the motel after the woman decided to report the incident Tuesday morning.

Police said the suspect - 36-year-old Nevada resident William Gergen - was found at another motel in the 3500 block of Chinden at around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday. He was booked into the Ada County Jail on felony charges of aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Investigators say it is not clear why the woman waited to report the assault. She was not seriously injured, police say.
