YMCA hosts charity 7-hour Spin-a-Thon

The community came together Monday for a 7-hour Spin-a-Thon to raise money for the YMCA's financial assistance program.

BOISE -- How long do you think you could ride a bike for without stopping? Maybe a few hours?

A group of cyclists at the West Valley YMCA cycled for seven hours straight Monday to raise awareness for their financial assistance program.

The “spin-a-thon” had a goal of reaching $2,500, and by 9 a.m., generous donors met the goal. In total, from 5 a.m. to noon riders helped raise more than $3,000.

The annual campaign is a yearly fundraising effort that help supports the Y's financial assistance program.

Mickey Pedersen, Regional Executive Director of the West and Homecourt YMCAs, says the program ensures everyone can participate in YMCA membership and programs.

"It's important because we support the kids and families in our community. We raise about $2.7 million across the Treasure Valley which helps those people who don't have the ability to pay," said Pedersen.

The money raised throughout the annual campaign helps make a difference for families who otherwise wouldn’t be able to be a part of the YMCA.

Last year, one in five swim lesson participants, and one out of every two children attending YMCA preschool and early childhood programs, received financial assistance.

The Treasure Valley Family YMCA President and CEO David Duro was a part of Monday’s event. He says working together as a community helps tackle critical issues in the community.

"We work to ensure every child is prepared to succeed in school, career and life. We empower others of all physical conditions to improve their health. We give people a place to belong, regardless of economic status,” said Duro.
