St. Luke's renews Boise Greenbike sponsorship

The Greenbike program in Boise is expanding.

BOISE - Boise's bike-sharing program keeps rolling along, and today organizers announced several new developments.

First, St. Luke's and Select Health have renewed their sponsorship of Boise Greenbike.

And they presented a $2,000 check to the Boise Parks and Recreation Department's Kristin Armstrong Youth Scholarship Fund, which allows children and families to enjoy recreational activities they might not be able to take part in otherwise.

The check includes money raised over the past year, from everyone who rented a special Greenbike that was painted to look like the bike Kristin rode in the Olympics.

"It was an honor to have people actually want to get on my bike and ride it, especially for such a great cause, such as just closing the gap and being inclusive around kids activities, and providing an opportunity for all children in our valley to participate in sports and camps and whatever that may be," said Armstrong.

The Boise Greenbike system has 127 bikes available for rent. We also found today out that the number of bikes will double later this year.

That expansion is paid for through a federal transportation alternatives grant and local matching funds.

And this summer, Boise Greenbike will launch the "equity program," designed to provide affordable access to the bike-share program for low-income people who may not have the credit or debit card that is currently required for membership.
