Winter storm rolling through Rockies

ITD is reporting snow, ice and slush on roadways in mountain areas. Stretches of two highways in eastern Idaho closed Saturday evening because of visibility problems.

A major winter storm has started sweeping through the U.S. Rocky Mountains, with heavy mountain snows and bitter cold temperatures forecast through the long Presidents Day weekend.

The National Weather Service says the Arctic front will sweep south from Canada, hitting Idaho and Montana first then Wyoming, Utah and Colorado by Sunday and Monday.

Saturday evening in southwest and south-central Idaho, the Idaho Transportation Department reported slick conditions on highways in the higher elevations.

Idaho 55 was snowy and slick in the McCall-Donnelly area and into New Meadows.

U.S. 95 had slush between New Meadows and Riggins, and wet, slick conditions from Council to New Meadows.

ITD reported snow on Idaho 75 from Stanley to Sun Valley, and on Idaho 21 between Idaho City and Lowman.

In eastern Idaho, U.S. Highway 20 from Ashton to the Montana border and Idaho 32 from Ashton to Tetonia were closed Saturday night because of blowing and drifting snow.

Warnings of potential blizzard conditions were issued on Saturday in western Montana, where up to two feet of snow was expected along with damaging winds up to 50 miles per hour.

In Wyoming, a skier was killed after triggering an avalanche near Jackson. Avalanche advisories were posted across the region.

Temperatures were expected to plummet by Sunday night on the Northern Plains, ushering in several days of frigid conditions.
