Organization works to stop crimes before they happen

If you see something, say something. Local law enforcement is urging the public to speak up in the wake of the Florida school shooting.

It’s safe to say we’re all asking the same question, what can we do to stop tragedies like Parkland, Florida? It might sound trite, but the advice from law enforcement is still: if you see something, say something. If that information is given to local law enforcement, it can make a big difference.

Crime Stoppers of Southwest Idaho has helped solve seemingly impossible crimes with few or no leads just because someone made a phone call. The organization has also helped prevent crimes from happening just because of an anonymous tip.

Crime Stoppers works hand-in-hand with law enforcement as well as schools to help protect those within the Treasure Valley.

Students, parents, or staff can go to the school’s resources office or administration to submit a tip; they can also submit a tip anonymously through the Crime Stoppers website, app, or over the phone. Every tip Crime Stoppers receives is followed up on.

“We take everything seriously and whenever a tip comes to Crime Stoppers, no matter what that tip says, I send that tip directly to the appropriate person to be reviewed. I'm not the person who reviews that tip, but I can tell you I work hand-in-hand with a lot of investigators throughout the state of Idaho and we've had numerous arrests and captures based upon anonymous tips,” said Ted Arnold with Crime Stoppers.

We’re all a part of communities, so if you see something you know shouldn’t be there or someone’s behavior doesn’t seem quite right, say something.

Arnold added even if someone says something in a joking matter, say something because if the information isn’t’ there, it can’t be acted upon.

It’s important to remember that Crime Stoppers is not 911. If it’s an emergency call 911. Arnold says if it’s something you want someone to know about, but is not happening right that moment, send the tip to Crime Stoppers or call 208-343-COPS.
