SHOSHONE, Idaho -- Shoshone Police shot and seriously injured a man after he opening fire at officers early Tuesday morning, Idaho State Police say.

The incident unfolded after a Shoshone Police officer pulled over 30-year-old Jesus J. Malagon of Hollister for a traffic infraction at about 1 a.m.

But while the officer was performing a check on Malagon, he drove away, leading officers on a chase. The pursuit ended when the suspect crashed his vehicle near the intersection of 450 West and 580 North in Lincoln County.

At that point, according to Idaho State Police, Malagon got out of his vehicle and began shooting at the officer. The officer returned fire, hitting Malagon at least once.

The officer was not hurt in the exchange of gunfire.

Malagon - who police say was "incapacitated" by his injuries - was airlifted to Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise. His condition was not immediately available Tuesday afternoon.

The officer who shot Malagon has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with Shoshone Police's police. The Critical Incident Task Force, led by ISP, has been called in to investigate.

According to court records, Malagon was out on bond for charges including being a felon in possession of a weapon, trafficking in marijuana, and trafficking in cocaine. Trials in those cases are set for next month.
